Course Description:  This course will provide the student with a practical approach in dealing with the complex and ever-changing laws of criminal procedure.  An illumination of the many aspects of police investigatory practices will be highlighted along with explanations and rationale of the laws and recommendations to appropriately and legally deal with the requirements of the laws.  Issues to be addressed will include arrest, confessions, search and seizure, pretrial identification, etc.  Additional content will include a review of the duties, rights, and liabilities of a law enforcement professional.

 

Course Objectives:  As a result of participation in this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the laws of criminal procedure
  • Identify the role of the 4th Amendment as it relates to search and seizures
  • Identify police investigatory practices
  • Analyze the legal requirements of a law
  • Define procedures associated with arrests, confessions, searches and seizures, pretrial identification
  • Describe the duties, rights and liabilities of a law enforcement professional as they relate to search and seizure

 

 

 

 

Grading/Evaluation:  Throughout the course, each student should keep a record of his/her grades so you should have a very good idea of how you are doing.  I DO NOT change any grades; you get exactly what you earn. There will be no “extra credit.” The only way I will change a grade is if I have made a mathematical error in computing your grade.  Final Grades will be computed as follows:

Online Course Attendance Policy

Students enrolled in credit-bearing courses at Lackawanna College will fail any course(s) in which they accumulate absences beyond the maximum number allowed. This pertains to online courses as well.

 

Attendance is defined by participating in an academic activity within the online classroom, which includes posting in a graded discussion forum or submitting a written assignment. Postings not related to the aforementioned activities will not count for attendance purposes.

Withdrawal Policy

A student has the privilege of withdrawing from any courses or from the College itself without academic penalty up to and including the final date for withdrawal indicated on the College calendar.

To withdraw officially from a course or from the College, a student must obtain the proper withdrawal form from the Student Affairs Office or from your Center Director, complete this form and submit it to the Registrar's Office before the final day for withdrawal without academic penalty as indicated on the College calendar. If a student stops attending a course for which he/she is registered after the published census date (end of drop/add) without having officially withdrawn from the course, the student will be assigned an AW (penalty-grade failure) for the class. No exceptions will be made.

Students who violate the College's Academic Integrity Policy and fail a course in consequence may not exercise the withdrawal privilege in that particular course.

 

Financial obligations to the College will be determined according to the Refund Policy.
