Description

This course teaches our students how to create, customize, and analyze accounting tasks using Microsoft Excel. Excel is a worksheet application used to facilitate accounting tasks in a more efficient and accurate way. Students will apply their knowledge from Principles of Accounting I by using Excel to record journal entries, financial statements, inventory costing, bank reconciliations, amortization schedules, and payroll registers. Students will perform vertical and horizontal analysis on financial statements by creating charts and calculating financial ratios. Data analysis tools will be introduced to perform budgeting and cost analysis. Pre-req ACC105

 

Objectives

  1. Create and customize a spreadsheet in order to journalize and post transactions by utilizing Excel’s basic features that will be the foundation for all subsequent topics. (chapter 1)
  2. Create an Excel file as a base to significantly increase the efficiency of preparing financial statements by using row/column manipulation, text alignment/control, and worksheet management. Create, modify, copy, and correct Excel formulas in order to perform accounting tasks. (chapter 2 and 3)
  3. Examine an inventory listing and calculate inventory cost under the FIFO, LIFO, and Weighted Average methods by using analysis tools in Excel such as data bars and pivot tables. (chapter 4)
  4. Import data from other sources and apply quick styles and conditional formatting in order to prepare a bank reconciliation. (chapter 5)
  5. Use the Quick Analysis button and built-in functions of Excel to calculate the depreciation expense for fixed assets. (chapter 6)
  6. Use advanced functions to create a payroll register, examine the VLOOKUP function, and enhance the layout of your worksheets. (chapter 7)
  7. Create a bond amortization schedule using complex financial functions such as the PV (present value), FV (future value), and PMT (payment) functions. (chapter 8)
  8. Perform vertical and horizontal analysis on financial statements by creating charts and calculating financial ratios.  Use data analysis to perform budgeting and cost analysis. (chapter 9 & 10)

 

Requirements

Students will be assessed on comprehending course content via: online class participation, lecture, discussion, projects, assignments, exams, and the final exam. 

All discussions will be administered on the portal.  However, quizzes will be completed in our Excel eLab classroom

Please arrange backup technology in case of computer issues.  There are computer rooms, and a library, on campus for your use.  ALWAYS save a copy of your work on a flash drive so you can have it in case of technical issues.  You should retain a copy of all of your course work until final grades are submitted for this course, in case I ask for an additional copy due to technical issues. 

Complete all discussions in a Word document first so you can have a copy and be able to perform a spelling and grammar check.  Then you can simply copy/paste onto the discussion board.  Print a copy of your graded quizzes/final exam, as proof of submission.

 

Evaluation

·         Chapter readings and reviewing lecture materials should be completed PRIOR to participating in any graded assignments/discussions.  If you skip reading the text or utilizing the additional resources (PowerPoints, handouts, and links) to ‘save time’ you will not get value out of your online courses.  You must put in the expected time.

  • You will be required to participate in weekly discussion on the portal. 

HOWEVER, this course may follow a different format from your other online courses. You will be required to:

    • Make 1 initial reply which answers the discussion question, in at least 250 words, by Thursday.
    • Make 3 additional replies during the week, in at least 100 words, by Sunday.
  • For weeks that have two discussions you will only be expected to do 1 initial post and 1 reply for each discussion question.

·         This course is highly structured around self-led tutorials which illustrate the use of Excel for Accounting.  There will be “Develop Your Skills” (DYS) tutorials in the chapters which illustrate how to perform tasks using Excel for Accounting. In addition, there are other exercises called Reinforce Your Skills (RYS), Apply Your Skills (AYS).  These are not graded.  However, the Extend Your Skills (EYS) will be graded and will be submitted on the PORTAL.   You will have chapter quizzes to test your knowledge.  Quizzes/Exams MUST be turned in via our ELAB classroom.

·         There will be a final examination of all chapters on eLab.

 

Online Course Attendance Policy

Students enrolled in credit-bearing courses at Lackawanna College will fail any course(s) in which they accumulate absences beyond the maximum number allowed. This pertains to online courses as well. Attendance is defined by participating in an academic activity within the online classroom, which includes posting replies in a graded discussion forum or submitting a written assignment. *Please note that the beginning of course activities common to all courses (Syllabus quiz, Course Navigation Quiz, Academic Honesty Pledge, Autobiography) DO NOT count for attendance purposes.

Students that fail to participate in an academic activity as described above in the online classroom prior to the last day to drop/add a course will automatically be dropped from the course.

Students who miss one week of participation will be DROPPED from the course. It is the responsibility of the student to formally withdraw from the course at the Registrar’s office.

 

Online Course Discussion Policy

In order to understand, remember, and benefit from what we learn in class, discussion and interaction are critical. Responses such as, “I like what you said.” “I agree.” Or “Good thinking.” are NOT acceptable. Also, you should NOT simply repeat what someone else has already said.

Good Discussions in Course Resources will help you, but you should also use this rubric to gain all possible points for your contributions and, more importantly, to get the most out of our class discussion!

Ask yourself the following questions to help guide you in having a great discussion:

  • Did I answer the discussion questions directly demonstrating a clear understanding of the material that promoted conversation?
  • Did I support my answers to the discussion questions with research and reading?
  • Did I respond to at least two classmates?
  • Did I continue the conversation with peers that replied to my discussion?
  • Did I answer any additional questions the instructor may have asked?
  • Are all of my responses detailed and clear?
  • Did I participate in the discussion on 4 separate days?
  • Did I relate my responses to the course reading, notes, and/or personal life?
  • Did I provide the class with a response that is non-generic and inspiring – meaning that they learned from what I have contributed and can continue the conversation
  • Did I use proper grammar, spelling and netiquette?

 

Responses that do not move the conversation forward by providing information to which others can respond and build upon will negatively affect your weekly score.

 

Withdrawal Policy

A student has the privilege of withdrawing from any courses or from the College itself without academic penalty up to and including the final date for withdrawal indicated on the College calendar.

To withdraw officially from a course or from the College, a student must obtain the proper withdrawal form from the Student Affairs Office or from your Center Director, complete this form and submit it to the Registrar's Office before the final day for withdrawal without academic penalty as indicated on the College calendar. If a student stops attending a course for which he/she is registered after the published census date (end of drop/add) without having officially withdrawn from the course, the student will be assigned an AW (penalty-grade failure) for the class. No exceptions will be made.

Students who violate the College's Academic Integrity Policy and fail a course in consequence may not exercise the withdrawal privilege in that particular course.

 

Financial obligations to the College will be determined according to the Refund Policy.

 

Instructor Policies

  • If you wish, email the instructor to schedule a meeting during office hours, or over the phone, to help you get started the first week of class.  This applies to the rest of the semester as well.
  • All emails and responses posted in the General Questions section of the forum will be answered within 24-48 hours.
  • All quizzes/exams turned in via eLab, as required, will be graded immediately.
  • Discussions will be graded within 5 days of the assignment due date.
  • Please arrange backup technology in case of computer issues.  ALWAYS save a copy of your work so you can have it in case of computer issues.  You should retain a copy of all of your course work until final grades are submitted for this course. NO ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED LATE.
  • Please take the initiative to ask for assistance whenever necessary.  Unlike an on-ground class I cannot see when you need clarification.
  • An online class is only as interactive as the learner wants it to be.  For best results, participate whenever possible!
  • Do NOT rely on the textbook to teach you everything you need to know.  Explore current literature in the field of Accounting to get a real-world look at what you learn in class.

Discussions are worth 50 points each.  All other assignments and exams will be worth 100 points each.

Due Dates and Late Penalties

There will be no late assignments or exams allowed.  It is up to the student to practice good time management and submit work on time.

Technological issues do not suffice as an excuse for late assignments.  Please arrange backup technology in case of issues.  ALWAYS save a copy of your work so you can have it in case of computer issues.

 

Academic Integrity

Academic dishonesty in any form, such as plagiarism and cheating, will not be tolerated. Sanctions will include an automatic F for plagiarism, but the severity or frequency of the violation may result in dismissal from the College as well. Please see the Student Handbook for a complete explanation.

 

The following are among the forms of dishonesty, in a classroom of any type, for which sanctions may be applied:

  • Using books, notes or other materials during an examination, unless expressly permitted;
  • Using purchased essays, term papers or preparatory research for such papers;
  • Copying others' work or engaging in unauthorized cooperation during an assignment or examination;
  • Allowing another student to copy from an examination or other assignment intended to be performed independently;
  • Borrowing from published works, whether material is taken verbatim or with minor alterations, without proper and/or sufficient acknowledgment;
  • Submitting as one’s own work originally done by someone else;
  • Submitting the same written report in more than one course without prior approval from the instructor(s) involved;
  • Stealing examinations or assignments;
  • Supplying or selling examinations or assignments;
  • Misrepresenting statements concerning work submitted;
  • Falsifying or fabricating experimental data or results;
  • Falsifying or fabricating the need for extensions on papers or make-up examinations.
  • Misrepresenting identity in an online course
