Note: At the very Least you need SAM Access, I have uploaded the textbook in SAM. You cannot pass this course without SAM!


 The textbook and SAM 2016 are required and must be purchased to complete the course work. It is expected that each student will have the text and SAM early in the first week of class or sooner.


USB Flash Drive for assignment storage, Microsoft Office 2016 (Windows 7 or newer version) installed on your personal computer, Internet access (broadband preferred).



This course provides an introduction to business computer applications. Students receive hands-on practice in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) software. Example projects include Word announcements, an MLA formatted sample research paper, and business letter. Excel workbooks using formulas, functions, charts, and formatting. PowerPoint slide shows with bulleted lists, themes, clip art, and slide transitions.


Extensive work on the student’s own computer or in the college’s computer labs is required. This course is not open to Computer Information Systems or IT Security majors. Students who have workplace or previous academic experience using MS Office are encouraged to enroll in CIS115 instead of CIS105. (3 Credits).



A CIS105 student should be able:


  1. Increase keyboarding proficiency by completing lessons using a typing tutor.
  2. Correctly use the portal and college email
  3. Practice using the computer operating system
  4. Complete SAM lessons to correlate with chapters covered in class
  5. Create, format, and edit a Word document; create a research paper with citations and references; create a business letter with a letter head and table
  6. Create and edit a PowerPoint presentation with clip art; create a presentation with pictures, shapes, and word art; add media to a presentation.
  7. Create an Excel worksheet and an embedded chart; use formulas, functions, and format the worksheet; work with large worksheets, charting, and what-if-analysis.



This course is designed as a hands-on course. The majority of your time will be devoted to completing the work I post at the portal that utilize the features of each of the software applications presented. You are expected to work on assignments on your own time in order to complete them by the due date. As you work to complete the assignments, the following resources are available to you: the course text, training assignments at the SAM 2016 Web site, and my handouts posted on the Handouts and Links page on the portal.


A portion of the assignments for this class will be completed at the SAM 2016 Website ( ). For each chapter of an application I will assign at least a SAM training exercise. Late assignments will be reduced in value by 10% for each calendar day they are late. Assignments will not be accepted after two calendar days late. Assignments not handed in are graded as zero.


You must register at the SAM Website during the first week of the semester and check for the assignments that are posted there. When you register, use our institution Key: T2093418 and the product key that was included in the SAM 2016 package and join our class section named CIS105OA Spring 2017 Online (Mapes).


You will be required to complete assignments on schedule. These will usually include but not limited to the chapter tutorial, the Apply Your Knowledge exercise and an In the Lab exercise. The instructions will be posted under the “Assignments” link at the class Website ( ). You will also upload the finished products instead of printing them, so that I can check and grade them. The assignments will be due by 11:55 pm, on the indicated due date. You must check the portal for the instructions and for what the products are. All course assignments will be posted at the “Assignments” page. Check it every day.


You must also post an answer to a discussion topic I set up on the Discussions page and respond to at least 3 other students during the discussion period. The exact requirements for posts and responses are given in the rubric for the discussion assignment.


The grades for your work in this course will posted to the Grades link on the portal. There will be a grading rubric for the textbook assignments you hand in via the portal. These will be in the form of file(s) attached to the assignment. I will fill in the rubric with the points you earn for each exercise and I will add comments to your assignments via the commenting features available in MS Office.  You can view these completed rubrics by opening the file I send back to the assignment at the “Assignments” page. The exam grade will be immediately displayed upon completing the exam at the SAM Website.


You are required to log onto to complete the typing portion of this class. You username will be FirstnameLastname (all one work) and your password will be your student ID If you have any issues contact me asap.



Training assignments will be posted for each chapter at the SAM website which you will complete and be graded on whether you complete each one.

Generally your work will be evaluated by how accurately you complete the lessons presented in the text and how you provide evidence that you know how to use the features of Office applications by completing documents, workbooks, and presentations.


You will also complete an exam on each of the applications during the course of the semester that are task oriented and are posted at the SAM website.



Online Course Attendance Policy

Students enrolled in credit-bearing courses at Lackawanna College will fail any course(s) in which they accumulate absences beyond the maximum number allowed. This pertains to online courses as well.


Attendance is defined by participating in an academic activity within the online classroom, which includes posting replies in a graded discussion forum or submitting a written assignment. Replies not related to the aforementioned activities will not count for attendance purposes.

  • You are required to engage in discussion at least TWICE on FOUR days throughout the week for a total of EIGHT replies in all, minimum.
  • You should respond to the initial DQs posted AND respond to your classmates.
  • Responses MUST be substantive. See the document titled Good Discussions in your Handouts and Links.
  • Responses that do not move the conversation forward by providing information to which others can respond and build upon will NOT be counted toward your weekly score.
  • Students who miss one week of discussion will be DROPPED from the course.
  • Students who do not log on to the course within the drop/add period for the course will be DROPPED from the course.


Online Course Discussion Policy

In order to understand, remember, and benefit from what we learn in class, discussion and interaction are critical. Responses such as, “I like what you said.” “I agree.” Or “Good thinking.” are NOT acceptable. Also, you should NOT simply repeat what someone else has already said.

You MUST reply no less than 8 times per week – twice on any four days.

Good Discussions in Handouts and Links will help you, but you should also use this rubric to gain all possible points for your contributions and, more importantly, to get the most out of our class discussion!

Withdrawal Policy

A student has the privilege of withdrawing from any courses or from the College itself without academic penalty up to and including the final date for withdrawal indicated on the College calendar.

To withdraw officially from a course or from the College, a student must obtain the proper withdrawal form from the Student Affairs Office or from your Center Director, complete this form and submit it to the Registrar's Office before the final day for withdrawal without academic penalty as indicated on the College calendar. If a student stops attending a course for which he/she is registered after the published census date (end of drop/add) without having officially withdrawn from the course, the student will be assigned an AW (penalty-grade failure) for the class. No exceptions will be made.

Students who violate the College's Academic Integrity Policy and fail a course in consequence may not exercise the withdrawal privilege in that particular course.


Financial obligations to the College will be determined according to the Refund Policy.


Instructor Policies

If you fail to complete the assignments for weeks 1 and 2, I will report you to the registrar as ‘Never Attended’ and you will not be allowed to return to the class.


Participation in the discussion forum will not be accepted late.

Assignments will not be accepted late.

Assignments will be closed and will not be re-opened beyond the due date.


When I send you e-mail, I will send it to the e-mail address supplied by the college, that is the ‘falcons’ e-mail. If you contact me by e-mail, send me the e-mail message from the address supplied by the college. This is accessible from the portal and takes the form Check this site for e-mail from me every day.


Post your questions about the assignments to the topics I will have set up under ‘Discussions’. Doing it this way will enable all students taking the class to see your questions and my answers.



Unless changes are announced, your final grade will be calculated from these 6 categories using the corresponding weight. You earn your final grade during the course of the ENTIRE semester.

Due Dates and Late Penalties

  • All weekly assignments and tests are due Sunday by 11:55pm no exceptions
  • The grace period for late assignments is as follows:
    • 1 day late-10% deduction off of the assignment grade
    • 2 days late-20% off of the assignment grade
    • 3 days late-the assignment will receive a grade of 0%
  • There will be no “extra credit.”



Academic Integrity

Academic dishonesty in any form, such as plagiarism and cheating, will not be tolerated. Sanctions will include an automatic F for plagiarism, but the severity or frequency of the violation may result in dismissal from the College as well. Please see the Student Handbook for a complete explanation.


The following are among the forms of dishonesty, in a classroom of any type, for which sanctions may be applied:

  • Using books, notes or other materials during an examination, unless expressly permitted;
  • Using purchased essays, term papers or preparatory research for such papers;
  • Copying others' work or engaging in unauthorized cooperation during an assignment or examination;
  • Allowing another student to copy from an examination or other assignment intended to be performed independently;
  • Borrowing from published works, whether material is taken verbatim or with minor alterations, without proper and/or sufficient acknowledgment;
  • Submitting as one’s own work originally done by someone else;
  • Submitting the same written report in more than one course without prior approval from the instructor(s) involved;
  • Stealing examinations or assignments;
  • Supplying or selling examinations or assignments;
  • Misrepresenting statements concerning work submitted;
  • Falsifying or fabricating experimental data or results;
  • Falsifying or fabricating the need for extensions on papers or make-up examinations.
