We strive to protect your privacy and hold your information in confidence. All contacts the Student Wellness Program are in accord with the Federal confidentiality rules (42 CFR Part 2), State confidentiality rules (MH Procedures Act of 1976), as amended by Pennsylvania Law. This means that any information disclosed during a student’s contact with the Student Wellness Program will be kept strictly confidential. A student’s written permission is required before any information about a student’s contact is released to anyone outside the Student Wellness Program   Confidentiality means that your contact with this office does not go on your academic record and that personal information will not be disclosed to any other office or individual unless you have signed a written release for this to occur.

There are, however, some exceptions to confidentiality. The following are the situations when the Student Wellness Program  would be required to release information:

  • If a minor child or elderly person is at risk of being abused or neglected, the Student Wellness Program  would be required to report that information to the appropriate agency to assure the safety of the child.
  • If a student presents an imminent risk of serious injury to him/herself. In this case, the Student Wellness Program  would take action to assure the student’s safety, releasing only the information needed to do this.
  • If a student threatens serious harm to another person. Again, the Student Wellness Program would have to take action to protect the other person, releasing only the information necessary to assure the person’s safety.
  • If information is subpoenaed through a court order.

While these types of events are extremely rare, you should know that these possibilities exist. All materials are handled confidentially and no materials with identifying information will leave the Student Wellness Program without obtaining a specific release to do so.

Our overall goal is to create a place where you will feel safe to talk about personal concerns and to help make your college experience positive. All services are of no cost to any Lackawanna College student. On the Student Wellness Program portal page, you will find numerous websites to assist you with information.
