LACKAWANNA COLLEGE SERVICE LEARNING AND VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS

Lackawanna College is focused on developing students, not only academically, but also as contributing future citizens. Involvement in the local community provides an environment where this growth can be started. There is an increasing need for philanthropic measures and it is our belief that the earlier a student can be invested in meeting local needs the more they will learn to give back in greater scale, statewide, nationally and, eventually, even globally. The goals of college service learning and the involvement in local volunteerism are:

·       Promote service-learning and thoughtful citizenship

·       Assist students with locating community volunteer opportunities

·       Provide assistance to faculty teaching academic service-learning courses

·       Assist student clubs and organizations with service and philanthropic activities

·       Connect non-profit agencies with Lackawanna College

LACKAWANNA COLLEGE SERVICE LEARNING

WHAT IS SERVICE LEARNING?

According to the National Service Learning Clearinghouse, Service Learning is defined as “a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities

Through involvement in Service Learning projects, students have the opportunity to gain a deeper hands-on understanding of the complex needs in their local community settings. This style of learning not only helps those who are benefiting from the student efforts, the students themselves are gaining critical thinking skills, more enhanced communication skills and a confident sense of how their contributions can make powerful changes in people’s lives.

STUDENT REACTIONS:

“..a great experience and I would not change a thing, it allowed students to work together , coordinate and work on something to help improve social interaction within our school.”

“Participating in service learning is beneficial to you and your community. It is an opportunity for you to get together with your classmates and be a benefit to your local community.”

“I feel as a class we worked extremely well together and working in groups also gave me the opportunity to get to know my fellow classmates a little bit better.”
