Text: Maisto, Galizio, & Connors. Drug Use and Abuse, 7th Edition. Cengage Learning, 2015.

All students are required to have a text for this course.

 

Description:

This course will provide an in-depth examination of the major drugs both legal and illegal used in American society. Concentration will be on the effects of recreational and prescription drugs on human health and behavior.

Objectives:

 

1. Distinguish among illicit drug use, deviant drug use, drug misuse, drug abuse, and

   drug addiction.

2. Describe the methods for gathering information about drug use and recognize the

   advantages and disadvantages of each method.

3. Become aware of recent trends in illicit drug use among high school students and

   adults of all races and ethnic groups.

4. Recognize psychosocial variables related to drug use.

5. Describe three basic processes relating to addiction.

6. Discuss some current methods of treating addiction.

7. Identify the major subdivisions of the nervous system and describe their function.

8. Complete a drug analysis paper describing a specific drug, the scope of the use of

   the drug in the U.S., how the drug affects the brain, the acute and chronic effects of    

   the drug, the dependence potential of the drug, the effects of the drug on an unborn    

   fetus, and the treatments available for people who abuse the drug.

 Requirements:

 Journal Reflections (10 points)

You are to respond to 5 Journal Reflection Questions demonstrating a clear understanding of the topic of question. There will be a topic of question for each one related to your course topics. You are to record your responses or reflections to the topic of question. In other words, it should be a record of your self-reflections to the topic of question. You are to include your perceptions and feelings expressed in a way that demonstrates your self-understanding and personal growth. You will need to upload your journal reflection response under Assignments on the designated Journal Reflection topic on your course page. You will also need to complete and upload the evaluation rubrics for each Journal Reflection entry. The Journal Reflection Rubric can be found under Course Resources. Be certain to complete each column of the rubric. Be specific as to where you think you met the requirement.

Weekly Journal Reflection Topics and Questions:

Topic 1- What is meant by deviant drug use? What do you believe is the relationship between drug use and crime? Does drug use cause crime or is crime simply a manifestation of personality. Explain your rationale.

Topic 2- Would decriminalization of illicit drug use increase or decrease drug-related social problems? Justify your answer. Provide examples.

Topic 3- Discuss the role of comorbidity between drug addiction and mental illness and its treatment. Which should be treated first? Does one cause the other? Explain your rationale.

Topic 4 - Discuss whether the often considered drug “benign” drug known as marijuana is or is not addictive. Consider the findings by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) that in 2011 for persons ages 12 or older, 41.9% of illicit drug users (107.8) million used marijuana during their lifetime, and past-month users of this drug accounted for 7% of all illicit drug users (18 million). Do you think this often considered “benign” drug is harmless to society?

Topic 5- Why is abuse of prescription drugs such a common problem? Why are some people more likely to abuse prescription drugs?

War on Drugs Online Debate (10 points)

It was 1971 when President Richard Nixon declared a "war on drugs." $2.5 trillion dollars later, drug use is half of what it was 30 years ago, and thousands of offenders are successfully diverted to treatment instead of jail. And yet, 22 million Americans-9% of the population-still uses illegal drugs, and with the highest incarceration rate in the world, we continue to fill our prisons with drug offenders. Decimated families and communities are left in the wake (http://intelligencesquaredus.org). Is it time to legalize drugs?

Watch Legalize Drugs-A Debate from Intelligence Squared U.S at https://youtu.be/aUiymTG2v9s to get you started with thinking about the War on Drugs. You will be assigned into 2 teams, Team Pro-Legalization of Drugs and Team Con-Legalization of Drugs. The Team Pro- Legalization of Drugs will argue the position for legalizing recreational drugs and Team Con-Legalization of Drugs will argue the position to not legalize recreational drugs. Include ethical implications in your argument. Major points must be well supported with relevant facts, statistics and/or examples, citing at least 2 credible resources to support facts. You do not necessarily have to agree with the argument you are presenting.

Post your argument in the discussion forum under Week 10. Reply to 2 other classmates from the opposing team debating your position. You will also need to upload your argument under Assignments on your course page. Be certain to cite 2 sources utilized to support your facts. You will also need to complete and upload the evaluation rubrics found under Course Resources. Be certain to complete each column of the rubric. Be specific as to where you think you met the requirement.

Read the Case Study of Katie from Course Resources on your course page. Answer the review questions below (also under Case Study Assignment from your Course Resources). Upload your assignment on your course page. You will also need to complete and upload the evaluation rubrics found under Course Resources. Be certain to complete each column of the rubric. Be specific as to where you think you met the requirement.

Review Questions:

  1. Describe how Katie may be affected by biological, genetic, pharmacological, cultural, social, and contextual, factors.
  2. At exactly what point do you think that Katie’s drug use lead to abuse? What occurred that lead to her drug abuse? When do you think drug use does not lead to abuse? What could Katie have done different to prevent her drug abuse?
  3. Discuss some methods for gathering information about Katie's drug use and identifying the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

Drug Analysis Research Paper (20 points)

You will complete a drug analysis research paper describing the following:

  • The nature of a specific drug. You can use any drug found in the textbook.
  • The scope of the use of the drug in the U.S.
  • How does the drug work? How the drug affects the brain.
  • The acute and chronic effects of the drug. The psychological and physiological effects of the drug.
  • The dependence potential of the drug.
  • The effects of the drug on an unborn fetus.
  • Treatments available for people who abuse the drug and their effectiveness.
  • What is being done to combat the adverse health effects associated with the drug?

Your drug analysis research paper must be 5-8 pages in length, double spaced, have one inch margins, and typed in 12 point type MLA/APA format and grammar, punctuation and spelling. Be certain to cite 3 sources utilized to support your facts. You will need to upload your assignment under Assignments on your course page. You will also need to complete and upload the evaluation rubrics found under Course Resources. Be certain to complete each column of the rubric. Be specific as to where you think you met the requirement.

Class Participation: Students are expected to attend class regularly. In order to facilitate discussion, it is imperative that students read the assigned material prior to attending class. Your presence and participation is an essential element in this class. Active participation means that you attend class, have read the material, can pose and answer questions, and are invested in group activities.

Evaluation:

Evaluation rubrics for each assignment will be completed for each student by the professor. Students will also be required to complete the designated evaluation rubrics for each assignment. Evaluation rubrics for each assignment can be found under Handouts and Links on the course page.

 

Exams (40 %): There will be 4 exams during the semester. Questions may be taken from any of the following: textbook reading, lecture material, class discussions, and visual materials.

Exam #1 (10%): Drug Use and Abuse; Drug Use Yesterday and Today; Drugs and the Nervous System

Midterm/Exam #2 (10%): Pharmacology and New Drug Development; Cocaine, Amphetamines, and Related Stimulants; Nicotine

Exam #3 (10%): Caffeine; Alcohol; Opiates; Marijuana

Final/Exam #4 (10%): Hallucinogens; Psychotropic Medications; Other Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drugs; Treatment of Substance Abuse

 

Students will be required to complete and upload the designated rubrics for each assignment found under handouts and links of your course portal page.

 

Attendance Policy:

Students enrolled in credit-bearing courses at Lackawanna College will fail any course(s) in which they accumulate absences beyond the maximum number allowed. This pertains to online classes as well. Attendance is tracked by instructors, so be sure to log on and adhere to the following scale:

Important Note: The word “attendance” refers to the act of “being present.” The phrase “being present” regards both physical and mental presence. Please know that I reserve the right to mark you absent if I feel that you are not mentally present. Please understand that I take this policy seriously. Additionally, you will be marked “half absent” if you come to class more than five minutes late, and fall asleep.

 

Withdrawal Policy:

A student has the privilege of withdrawing from any courses or from the College itself without academic penalty up to and including the final date for withdrawal indicated on the College calendar.

To withdraw officially from a course or from the College, a student must obtain the proper withdrawal form from the Student Affairs Office or from your Center Director, complete this form and submit it to the Registrar's Office before the final day for withdrawal without academic penalty as indicated on the College calendar. If a student stops attending a course for which he/she is registered after the published census date (end of drop/add) without having officially withdrawn from the course, the student will be assigned an AW (penalty-grade failure) for the class. No exceptions will be made.

Students who violate the College's Academic Integrity Policy and fail a course in consequence may not exercise the withdrawal privilege in that particular course.

 

Financial obligations to the College will be determined according to the Refund Policy.

 

Instructor Policies:

  • Attendance in the online classroom and active participation is required.
  • Students are expected to complete assigned materials as designated and to participate in online discussions. Your contribution in online discussions is an important part of the learning process.      
  • Grades are non-negotiable.
  • Students are expected to exhibit honesty in all academic endeavors.

 

 

Grading:

Your grade for the course will be based on an average of the scores that you earn on each assignment. Below, the first table shows the allocation of your course grade. The second table shows the value of each grade as determined by Lackawanna College.

Due Dates and Late Penalties:

  • The grace period for late assignments is as follows:
    • 1 day late-10% deduction off of the assignment grade
    • 2 days late-20% off of the assignment grade
    • 3 days late-the assignment will receive a grade of 0%
  • There will be no “extra credit.”

 

Academic Integrity

Academic dishonesty in any form, such as plagiarism and cheating, will not be tolerated. Sanctions will include an automatic F for plagiarism, but the severity or frequency of the violation may result in dismissal from the College as well. Please see the Student Handbook for a complete explanation.

 

The following are among the forms of dishonesty, in a classroom of any type, for which sanctions may be applied:

  • Using books, notes or other materials during an examination, unless expressly permitted;
  • Using purchased essays, term papers or preparatory research for such papers;
  • Copying others' work or engaging in unauthorized cooperation during an assignment or examination;
  • Allowing another student to copy from an examination or other assignment intended to be performed independently;
  • Borrowing from published works, whether material is taken verbatim or with minor alterations, without proper and/or sufficient acknowledgment;
  • Submitting as one’s own work originally done by someone else;
  • Submitting the same written report in more than one course without prior approval from the instructor(s) involved;
  • Stealing examinations or assignments;
  • Supplying or selling examinations or assignments;
  • Misrepresenting statements concerning work submitted;
  • Falsifying or fabricating experimental data or results;
  • Falsifying or fabricating the need for extensions on papers or make-up examinations.
  • Misrepresenting identity in an online course
