Description:

This course is a review of the major drugs used in today’s society and their affect on human behavior and neurophysiology.

Objectives:

To survey the major drugs used in society today.

To investigate the effects of drugs such as alcohol, barbiturates, stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, cannabis and performance enhancing drugs.

To understand the effects of these drugs on human behavior

Requirements:

3 Exams

1 small paper

1 PowerPoint Assignment (15 SLIDE MINIMUM. Does not include cover slide)

Attendance and Participation are graded and required

Examinations:

All exams will be held in the classroom during regular class time

POWERPOINT REQUIREMENTS:

Number of slides: Minimum of 16

Topic: any topic from the text

Bullets per slide: Minimum of 3

Style: APA

 

Any information not covered in class will still be the responsibility of the student on any test or quiz.

Attendance Policy:

Students enrolled in credit-bearing courses at Lackawanna College will fail any course(s) in which they accumulate absences beyond the maximum number allowed. This pertains to online classes as well. Attendance is tracked by instructors, so be sure to log on and adhere to the following scale:

Withdrawal Policy:

A student has the privilege of withdrawing from any courses or from the College itself without academic penalty up to and including the final date for withdrawal indicated on the College calendar.

To withdraw officially from a course or from the College, a student must obtain the proper withdrawal form from the Student Affairs Office or from your Center Director, complete this form and submit it to the Registrar's Office before the final day for withdrawal without academic penalty as indicated on the College calendar. If a student should stop attending or never attend an enrolled class without officially withdrawing prior to the last day to withdraw without academic penalty, the student will receive a grade of F* (Failure) in these courses. No exceptions will be made.

Students who violate the College's Academic Integrity Policy and fail a course in consequence may not exercise the withdrawal privilege in that particular course.

Financial obligations to the College will be determined according to the Refund Policy.

Instructor Policies

 

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Attendance is expected regularly. A student will be allowed three mental health days. After the third cut the student will be dropped from the class. Lack of participation will adversely affect the student’s final grade.

 

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR POLICY

Any student disrupting this class will be warned about their behavior once. If a second incident occurs they will be dismissed from the class. Any student dismissed from the class will not be able to return under any circumstances. Cell phone use and talking while class is in progress is not acceptable.

 

EXTRA CREDIT POLICY

There will be extra credit in this class.  It will be discussed further.

 

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AND PLAGIARISM POLICY

Students are expected to follow College policy with regard to issues of academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism) and proper conduct in the classroom. Please see the Lackawanna College Student Handbook concerning Classroom Guidelines and academic integrity. Academic dishonesty will result in a grade of 0 for the test or assignment. Violations of college policy may result in permanent dismissal from the classroom and a failing grade for the course.

 

FOOD AND BEVERAGE POLICY

Students are allowed to bring any type of food or beverages into the classroom.

 

ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY

Students will not be allowed to bring any electronic devices into the classroom. This includes cell phones and iPods, notebooks and laptops. Failure to comply with this policy will lead to dismissal from the classroom.

Grading: Course grades will be assigned based on the number of total points a student earns throughout the term.

Academic Integrity

Academic dishonesty in any form, such as plagiarism and cheating, will not be tolerated. Sanctions will include an automatic F for plagiarism, but the severity or frequency of the violation may result in dismissal from the College as well. Please see the Student Handbook for a complete explanation.

The following are among the forms of dishonesty for which sanctions may be applied:

  • Using books, notes or other materials during an examination, unless expressly permitted;
  • Using purchased essays, term papers or preparatory research for such papers;
  • Copying others' work or engaging in unauthorized cooperation during an assignment or examination;
  • Allowing another student to copy from an examination or other assignment intended to be performed independently;
  • Borrowing from published works, whether material is taken verbatim or with minor alterations, without proper and/or sufficient acknowledgment;
  • Submitting as one’s own work originally done by someone else;
  • Submitting the same written report in more than one course without prior approval from the instructor(s) involved;
  • Stealing examinations or assignments;
  • Supplying or selling examinations or assignments;
  • Misrepresenting statements concerning work submitted;
  • Falsifying or fabricating experimental data or results;
  • Falsifying or fabricating the need for extensions on papers or make-up examinations.
