This course is a review of abnormal behaviors that affect human beings. The course includes a review of the various paradigms of abnormal behavior and the leading treatment modalities for those behaviors.




1)To explore the development, etiologies, theories and treatment interventions regarding behavior exceptionalities encountered by human services workers and educators.


2)Explore the behavior associated with mental retardation, schizophrenia, ADHD, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and personality disorders.


3)Understand the social, psychological, educational, and intervention issues associated withexceptionalities.


4)Understand and assess exceptionalities from the viewpoints of the main paradigms.

Online Course Attendance Policy

Students enrolled in credit-bearing courses at Lackawanna College will fail any course(s) in which they accumulate absences beyond the maximum number allowed. This pertains to online courses as well.








Attendance is defined by participating in an academic activity within the online classroom, which includes posting in a graded discussion forum or submitting a written assignment. Postings not related to the aforementioned activities will not count for attendance purposes.

Attendance Policy: Regular participation in classroom discussion and regular submission of answers to chapter questions.






Withdrawal Policy:


A student has the privilege of withdrawing from any courses or from the College itself without academic penalty up to and including the final date for withdrawal indicated on the College calendar.




To withdraw officially from a course or from the College, a student must obtain the proper withdrawal form from the Student Affairs Office or from your Center Director, complete this form and submit it to the Registrar's Office before the final day for withdrawal without academic penalty as indicated on the College calendar. If a student should stop attending or never attend an enrolled class or classes without officially withdrawing prior to the last day to withdraw without academic penalty, the student will receive a grade of F* (Failure) in these courses. No exceptions will be made.




Students who violate the College's Academic Integrity Policy and fail a course in consequence may not exercise the withdrawal privilege in that particular course.




Financial obligations to the College will be determined according to the Refund Policy.

                Students are expected to follow College policy with regard to issues of academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism) and proper conduct in the classroom.  Please see the LackawannaCollege Student Handbook concerning Classroom Guidelines and academic integrity.  Academic dishonesty will result in a grade of 0 for the test or assignment. Violations of college policy may result in permanent dismissal from the classroom and a failing grade for the course.

Here are some Etiquette Rules for this online course that everyone needs to read and abide by:


1. Golden Rule: Treat others as you would like to be treated (this applies to online conversations).


2. No “Flaming”: Flaming is a form of verbal abuse when you intentionally attack or disrespect somebody for whatever reason. Maybe you didn’t agree with something they said, but there’s a nice way to share a different point of view without name calling or attacking someone.


3. Respect Others’ Copyrights: These things have copyrights and licenses. Copying the works of someone else without permission or saying it is your own will not only ruin your online reputation, but could cost you a lawsuit.


4. DON’T TYPE IN ALL CAPS: It makes someone think that you are shouting at them.


5. Don’t Spam: This is an on-line course so let’s keep it educational.


6. Be Honest: Faking website statistics, pretending to be someone else, or trying to cheat people online will not only hurt your reputation, but will cause you a lot of trouble.


7. Use Proper Grammar and Spelling: Spelling isn’t always easy and typos and basic spelling mistakes will occur, but it can be distracting from your work and can be annoying.


8. Keep it PG-13: It can come back to haunt you if you write something that is not appropriate and you can be penalized for swearing.


9. Research Your Facts and Cite Sources: Before posting something, forwarding e-mails, make sure it is factual and cite sources where needed.


10. Remember Your Place: A web-based classroom is still a classroom, and comments that would be inappropriate in a classroom are likely to be inappropriate in a web-based course as well. Treat your professor and fellow students with respect.

o     The grace period for late assignments is as follows:


§   1 day late-10% deduction off of the assignment grade


§   2 days late-20% off of the assignment grade


§   3 days late-the assignment will receive a grade of 0%


o     There will be no “extra credit.”
