Description:

MAT 135 (Formerly MA 118) – Introductory Statistics and Data Analysis This course introduces descriptive and inferential statistics with an emphasis on techniques and applications to real-world situations. Topics include descriptive statistics, statistical distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, contingency tables, regression, and correlation.

Prerequisite: MAT 115 or MAT 120. (3 Credits)

Objectives:

1. Identify branches of statistics, types of data, four basic sampling techniques and observational and experimental studies

2. Organize and represent data in frequency distributions using histograms, frequency polygons and ogives.

3. Analyze data using measures of central tendency, variation and position including mean, median, mode, midrange, range, variance, standard deviation, percentiles, deciles, quartiles and boxplots.

4. Determine the probability of an event(s) using classical or empirical probability utilizing addition, multiplication and counting rules including permutations and combinations and conditional probability.

5. Construct a probability distribution for random variables using mean, variance, standard deviation for discrete random variables including binomial and normal distributions.

6. Identify properties of normal distribution, symmetric or skewed and applying z values to determine, area, probability, percentages and normal approximation.

Requirements:

To successfully complete this course, you will need to:

  • Participate in the weekly discussions
  • Complete weekly homework, weekly quizzes, a midterm and a final based on the assigned materials.
  • Submit two tutorials (one group, one individual) on course materials.

Evaluation:

Your grade will be determined based on a percentage system. There are six objectives in this course and each is worth 10% comprising 60% of your final grade. Most objectives have an Webworks homework assignment AND Webworks quiz assignment. The midterm is 10% of your final grade and the final is 10% of your final grade. The remaining 20% consists of participation which includes discussions and tutorials. You will create two tutorials addressing a topic that is covered in this course. One will be done as a group and the other will be done as an individual. See the Assignments section for more information on both. For discussions you will answer two separate questions and add six additional responses on a weekly basis. See the Online Course Attendance Policy below for more information regarding answering discussion questions on the forum.

Online Course Attendance Policy

Students enrolled in credit-bearing courses at Lackawanna College will fail any course(s) in which they accumulate absences beyond the maximum number allowed. This pertains to online courses as well.

Attendance is defined by participating in an academic activity within the online classroom, which includes posting in a graded discussion forum or submitting a written assignment. Postings not related to the aforementioned activities will not count.

  • You are required to engage in discussion at least TWICE on FOUR days throughout the week for a total of EIGHT replies in all, minimum.

  • Responses that do not move the conversation forward by providing information to which others can respond and build upon will NOT be counted toward your weekly score.
  • Students who miss one week of discussion will be DROPPED from the course.
  • Students who do not log on to the course within the drop/add period for the course will be DROPPED from the course.

Online Course Discussion Policy

In order to understand, remember, and benefit from what we learn in class, discussion and interaction are critical. Responses such as, “I like what you said.” “I agree.” Or “Good thinking.” are NOT acceptable. Also, you should NOT simply repeat what someone else has already said.

 

You MUST reply no less than 8 times per week – twice on any four days.

Withdrawal Policy:

A student has the privilege of withdrawing from any courses or from the College itself without academic penalty up to and including the final date for withdrawal indicated on the College calendar.

 

To withdraw officially from a course or from the College, a student must obtain the proper withdrawal form from the Student Affairs Office or from your Center Director, complete this form and submit it to the Registrar's Office before the final day for withdrawal without academic penalty as indicated on the College calendar. If a student should stop attending or never attend an enrolled class or classes without officially withdrawing prior to the last day to withdraw without academic penalty, the student will receive a grade of F* (Failure) in these courses. No exceptions will be made.

 

Students who violate the College's Academic Integrity Policy and fail a course in consequence may not exercise the withdrawal privilege in that particular course.

 

Financial obligations to the College will be determined according to the Refund Policy.

Grading:

All discussions and tutorials will be scored using the provided rubric in the assignment section. Homeworks, quizzes, midterm and final will be completed on Webworks and are immediately scored based on correctness.

Due Dates and Late Penalties:

  • Generally speaking, late assignments are NOT accepted.
    • Please contact me regarding extenuating circumstances
    • Technical difficulties is NOT an excuse for late work.
  • There will be no “extra credit.”

Academic dishonesty in any form, such as plagiarism and cheating, will not be tolerated. Sanctions will include an automatic F for plagiarism, but the severity or frequency of the violation may result in dismissal from the College as well.   • Using books, notes or other materials during an examination, unless expressly permitted;
  • Using purchased essays, term papers or preparatory research for such papers;
  • Copying others' work or engaging in unauthorized cooperation during an assignment or examination;
  • Allowing another student to copy from an examination or other assignment intended to be performed independently;
  • Borrowing from published works, whether material is taken verbatim or with minor alterations, without proper and/or sufficient acknowledgment;
  • Submitting as one’s own work originally done by someone else;
  • Submitting the same written report in more than one course without prior approval from the instructor(s) involved;
  • Stealing examinations or assignments;
  • Supplying or selling examinations or assignments;
  • Misrepresenting statements concerning work submitted;
  • Falsifying or fabricating experimental data or results;
  • Falsifying or fabricating the need for extensions on papers or make-up examinations.
