Text:

A Job Start 101 workbook provided by the instructor will serve as the text for this course. However, you may also be provided with readings via either handout or email to supplement your understanding of course objectives. The student must provide a scanned in PDF final portfolio submission with table of contents organization.

Description:

COL 201: The Capstone is the culmination of the Lackawanna College learning experience. Students will assemble the portfolio and final reflection, demonstrating how their education has been applied to illustrate their value as a professional. The Capstone course will further prepare all students for success in post-college employment and/or future education.

Note: College 201 is mandatory for all Students. Students who receive a failing grade or did not attend the course must complete their portfolio requirements in order to graduate and are subject to a $150 late fee.

Method of Instruction:

This course is highly interactive and will guide engagement through self-evaluation, application of specific techniques, discussions, field experiences, and traditional classroom exercises including lectures, discussions, individual research, film and video tapes, and written exercises.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the value of career preparation, explain how your applied learning in and/or acquired important life skills through your major coursework and non-academic pursuits relate to your career.
  2. Transact basic College business (e.g. utilize transfer resources and agreements on portal, Financial Aid Exit Interview etc.).
  3. Live, work, and learn respectfully and cooperatively with people of diverse backgrounds and beliefs to develop a professional network.
  4. Participate in the community culture by completing a service learning activity.
  5. Engage in reflection, self-knowledge, self-discovery and problem-solving to identify and assess personal strengths and weaknesses and define personal values and goals to enhance your professional development.
  6. Practice oral and written business communication skills including effective reading, listening, and public speaking and collaborating.
  7. Recognize and utilize resources and technology effectively for career development.
  8. Locate, evaluate and interpret career information and articulate acquired learning in a résumé.
  9. Identify the various purposes of portfolios and know the conventions of developing and professionally presenting a portfolio.

 

Your Responsibilities

In this course, you will have a variety of regular responsibilities. Your grade for the course will be determined by these responsibilities, which include your participation in class discussions, homework and outside assignments that meet the course competencies. Keep this syllabus safe and handy. It will serve as your contract and guide for this course, and it will provide you with the information you need to succeed. However, if you have questions regarding any portion of this syllabus or the course please do not hesitate to ask either via email, phone, or in-person. Your ideas and suggestions are welcome!    

Participation/Professionalism

Participation and interaction is the key to your success! Therefore, weekly completed discussions are expected and required.

A self-paced, online career and education planning tool for college students and future employers.

Letters of Recommendation

The letter of recommendation is a letter written on your behalf, typically from a faculty member or employer that recommends you as a good candidate for graduate study or employment.

Résumé

A brochure to market who you are! Each résumé should be tailored to the job or career that you are seeking. Your résumé MUST be 100% error free, otherwise it will be 100% rejected.

Reflection Paper

The final section of your portfolio is a reflective paper documenting your overall academic experience at Lackawanna College.

Cover Letter

The goal of completing a cover letter is to provide you with a foundation for building skills needed to effectively get a job in this professional field.

Application for FSBPT and State Board of Choice for PTA licensure

Learning how to complete the FSBPT and state board applications for sitting for NPTE PTA exam and licensure will provide the student with ability to sit for boards exam upon graduation.

Completion of Child Abuse Reporting Training

The completion of these three mandated hours of child abuse reporting training will provide the completion of one requirement for sitting for NPTE PTA exam upon graduation.

Interview

A practice interview to help prepare a job candidate gain confidence by better knowing and preparing themselves.

Portfolio Submission

The portfolio is a collection of student learning documentation that provides tangible evidence of a student’s proficiency in selected courses.  It is developed by each individual student and should include several representative samples of a student’s work with the emphasis on the student’s chosen major.

Community Service with Essay

Through involvement in Service Learning projects, students have the opportunity to gain a deeper hands-on understanding of the complex needs in their local community settings. This style of learning not only helps those who are benefiting from the student efforts, the students themselves are gaining critical thinking skills, more enhanced communication skills and a confident sense of how their contributions can make powerful changes in people’s lives. Also looks good on your résumé!

Attendance Policy:

Students enrolled in credit-bearing courses at Lackawanna College will fail any course(s) in which they accumulate absences beyond the maximum number allowed. This pertains to online classes as well. Attendance is tracked by instructors, so be sure to log on and adhere to the following scale:

Withdrawal Policy

A student has the privilege of withdrawing from any courses or from the College itself without academic penalty up to and including the final date for withdrawal indicated on the College calendar.

To withdraw officially from a course or from the College, a student must obtain the proper withdrawal form from the Student Affairs Office or from your Center Director, complete this form and submit it to the Registrar's Office before the final day for withdrawal without academic penalty as indicated on the College calendar. If a student stops attending a course for which he/she is registered after the published census date (end of drop/add) without having officially withdrawn from the course, the student will be assigned an AW (penalty-grade failure) for the class. No exceptions will be made.

Students who violate the College's Academic Integrity Policy and fail a course in consequence may not exercise the withdrawal privilege in that particular course.

 

Financial obligations to the College will be determined according to the Refund Policy.

Your grade for the course will be based on an average of the scores that you earn on each assignment. Below, the first table shows the allocation of your course grade. The second table shows the value of each grade as determined by Lackawanna College.

Due Dates and Late Penalties

You must hand work in on or before the due date!

There will be no “extra credit.”

 

Academic Integrity

Academic dishonesty in any form, such as plagiarism and cheating, will not be tolerated either in the online or traditional classrooms. Sanctions will include an automatic F for plagiarism, but the severity or frequency of the violation may result in dismissal from the College as well.

 

The following are among the forms of dishonesty, in a classroom of any type, for which sanctions may be applied:

  • Using books, notes or other materials during an examination, unless expressly permitted;
  • Using purchased essays, term papers or preparatory research for such papers;
  • Copying others' work or engaging in unauthorized cooperation during an assignment or examination;
  • Allowing another student to copy from an examination or other assignment intended to be performed independently;
  • Borrowing from published works, whether material is taken verbatim or with minor alterations, without proper and/or sufficient acknowledgment;
  • Submitting as one’s own work originally done by someone else;
  • Submitting the same written report in more than one course without prior approval from the instructor(s) involved;
  • Stealing examinations or assignments;
  • Supplying or selling examinations or assignments;
  • Misrepresenting statements concerning work submitted;
  • Falsifying or fabricating experimental data or results;
  • Falsifying or fabricating the need for extensions on papers or make-up examinations.
  • Misrepresenting identity in an online course
